Khanarat Filter

This filter brings stolen history back to life.

About the this filter

This plaque represents Thai democratic revolution in June 24th, 1932 – a transition from Absolute Monarchy to Constitutional Monarchy. On 14 April 2017, it was found missing and replaced by an ultra-royalist plaque.

I was inspired to turn the Khanarat plaque into a filter after seeing how accessible AR technology was becoming, especially with applications like Instagram and Snapchat. Unlike real historical landmarks, AR allows anyone from anywhere to closely observe the 3D model in their own time. My goal is to emphasize that even though the original plaque was removed, the meaning that it holds cannot be erased. The filter gained 4.4 M impressions in the first month on Instagram.

Why AR

My favorite thing about today’s technology is that it’s very accessible and free, especially with Instagram. Anyone can access the filter, people can take it anywhere and do whatever they wish with it. With that, the filter gives the user a feeling of ownership. I think it’s very powerful for someone to feel like they own a piece of history that represents them and their rights.
